Worship
Our worship service, like our congregation, has a diverse and inclusive spirit. Worship is designed to nurture spirit and community, deepen faith roots and activate lives for service in the world.
Music is central in the worship experience and ranges from traditional to blue grass with an occasional Bob Dylan tune added to the mix. The pastor's weekly reflection is most often rooted in a biblical passage with relevant application for this day and age. Intergenerational commitments are expressed by beginning and ending our worship time as an entire group. However, the young ones have a program of their own during much of the worship service.
When and Where
Worship service and church school are held in the Aspinall-Wilson Center at 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning. The building is located at 909 Escalante Drive which is on the east side of town and (roughly) behind the Holiday Inn Express and just south of the Western State campus.
What to Expect
Recently a visitor told us that he had never been welcomed as warmly into a congregation as when he visited us. We hope you have a similar experience.
The service lasts about an hour and includes prayer, readings, music and a reflection on the weekly scripture. Our pastor loves to tell stories and the reflection is usually based in narrative.
When you come to worship you can expect a friendly crowd of people who enjoy being together. The worship service has a casual tone and people wear anything from blue jeans to a shirt and tie. We like to sing and the music is varied from week to week. The Gunnison Congregational String Band leads music some weeks and an accomplished musician, Nancy Parent, other weeks. You’ll need to come more than once to experience the range of musical expression.
Initially we gather as one group, adults and children together, and after the children’s message the kids go across the hall for church school. We utilize the Seasons of the Spirit church school curriculum which weaves biblical stories with core spiritual values like peace and justice. The service is concluded by gathering again as one group and singing a closing song such as "Let There Be Peace on Earth."
Refreshments are served after the service and we hope you will join us for treats and conversation.
